WEST CHESTER, Pa. – Michelle Kirk scored two trys and finished with 10 points, but visiting Navy was too powerful in a 53-24 women’s rugby match Saturday afternoon on West Chester University’s Rugby Pitch.
The Midshipmen scored five unanswered trys in the first half to blow open a 7-5 tilt and take a 36-5 advantage.
Drew Groswith punched in a try shortly before halftime to pull the hosts to within 36-10 at the break. However, Navy was able to keep the Golden Rams at bay with three more trys in the second half.
Elizabeth Trujillo scored three trys to finish with 15 points for the Mids. Breanna Strand posted two trys and added a conversion for 12 points while Jamie Latta scored one try and converted three others for an 11-point outing.
Navy struck first four minutes into the contest when Sasha Frankhouser scored and Latta converted to put the Mids up 7-0.
West Chester fought right back when Kirk jumped over the line for the first of her two trys four minutes later that pulled the hosts to within two, 7-5. The Golden Rams had missed a penalty kick one minute prior to Kirk’s try.
However, Trujillo scored three consecutive trys for Navy within an eight minute span that put the guests on top, 24-5, midway through the opening half.
The Golden Rams will travel to Albuquerque, N.M. next weekend for the USA Rugby Tournament. West Chester takes on Brown University on Friday, April 18 in the first round.
